Emerging Spheres 2014

Client: Jawl Enterprises Architect: D’Ambrosio Architecture + Urbanism 2950 Jutland Road Victoria BC

Emerging Spheres was created to embrace the framework of the main exposed staircase of 2950 Jutland Road, a mixed-use complex. The idea for the piece developed as I became familiar with the spacial qualities of the spiralling stairs as they shaped and inhabited the central void of the stairwell. Wanting to provide a counter point to the angularity of the stairs I chose a Spherical form made of stainless steel. This provided a surface area and a degree of reflection that allows for an interface between forms without creating a conflicting presence. Light plays a role in varying the visual array and further extending the dialogue between the stairs concrete surface and angularity reflected in the frosted stainless steel surfaces. It is my hope that one might experience a moment of delight, a pause, to experience the pattern created by the emerging spheres as they travel upwards in their glass house.
